Sound Design In Ableton Live – Operator

FM Synthesis
FM synthesis represents an extremely powerful set of tools for creating your own sounds, and Ableton’s “Operator” instrument represents a well-thought-out entry into that world. Unfortunately, much of the instructional material relating to FM synthesis doesn’t really explain how it works in a way that doesn’t involve lots of math and theory while still showing how it can actually be used. My goal with this roughly 4 hour Ableton Live tutorial series was to fill that gap, showing the user through practical application just how amazing and yet easy to use FM synthesis can be.
Here are just a few of the things you will learn to create through these videos:
- DYNAMIC drumtracks being generated by just one Operator
- DEEP bass instruments that work well in any mix
- SIMULATIONS of the modified and abused devices from the world of circuit-bending
- EXOTIC soundscapes that shimmer and morph over their playback
- METALLIC percussion and stabs that are perfect for heavily rhythmic music such as Techno or Dubstep
- ALIEN soundbeds that are just as useful in music as they are in movie soundtracks

Creating music using audio sources such as vinyl and field-recordings requires a unique set of tools and working methods that is often very different from what is involved in producing other genres. Additionally, when you begin using Ableton Live for the first time, it’s easy to become overwhelmed by the enormous amount of features and possibilities within the software. Therefore, my goal with this miniseries is to spare you countless hours of learning extraneous features, and instead focus on the tools and techniques you actually need to create sample-based music in Live. Further, this series will be an excellent guide for producers who are already familiar with hardware workstations (such as the MPC-series or MV8000) to transition their workflow into Ableton Live.
The course consists of 10 lessons in about 2 hours:
Video 1 – Introduction
Video 2 – Intro to Sampler and Drum Racks
Video 3 – Getting Audio into Live with the External Instrument Device
Video 4 – Finding and Cropping Breaks and the Clip View
Video 5 – Multi-Clip Playback Possibilities and Clip Envelopes
Video 6 – Slicing and More about Drum Racks
Video 7 – Slicing and Stacking Melodic Sounds
Video 8 – Creating Custom Drums with Layering
Video 9 – Resampling and Creating Drum Rack Presets
Video 10 – Wrapping Up

So why should you care about learning how to create your own sounds using samplers, synthesizers, and audio effects? For one, the ability to control every timbral quality of the musicthat you use to represent yourself as an artist is a HUGE advantage nowadays. To realize your sonic vision, you need more than a great sample library! Additionally, a true understanding of your tools on a deeper level can catapult you from a consumer and recycler of other peoples’ sounds onto a level where you have the last word on every aspect of your sonic vision. This is about innovation and setting yourself apart. This is where these sound design tutorials come in. Using the native tools of Ableton Live plus the extremely flexible “Sampler” instrument, I have devised a set of lessons to help you take any ordinary sound and turn it into something completely new and useful. For 10 years I have been developing and using these techniques, helping others learn them as well.

Looking to improve your skills with sound synthesis? How about more information on Ableton’s most misunderstood instrument? These two questions spawned this 3 hour 40 minute video tutorial series on the Analog synthesizer. Many people have been wondering where to begin with Analog’s interface and powerful functionality: “Sound Design in Ableton Live: Analog” serves as both a missing manual for the instrument plus a comprehensive introduction to the most important concepts in subtractive synthesis. By the end of the series, you’ll have a better understanding of the logic behind Analog’s interface and as well as its sonic potential.
